Internet search giant Google has recently announced its latest acquisition ---- that of San Francisco-based startup Jetpac, which is the company behind a social travel mobile app that shows up the users' contextual search results from a database of social media posts.
The social travel app created by Jetpac has been designed to unfold interesting city guides. The iOS app essentially makes use of photos which are publicly posted in social networking sites like Instagram and Facebook. With the help of the Jetpac app, users can get contextual details about the locations at which the photos were taken.
The 2011-founded Jetpac app initially gave the users the ability to explore the travel pictures taken from the accounts of their friends on social media sites. However, of late, the startup has developed a unique new mechanism which can spot smiles in photos; thus enabling users to ascertain the happiness rate of the people in a city.
As a result of Jetpac's acquisition by Google, the company will remove its app from Apple's App Store, ending support for the app with effect from September 15, 2014.
Announcing the acquisition in a Twitter post, Jetpac co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Pete Warden said: "We look forward to working on exciting projects with our colleagues at Google. We'll be removing Jetpac's apps from the App Store in the coming days, and ending support for them on 9/15."
