Michael J Fox Foundation to use Smartwatches to Fight against Parkinson’s Disease

The Michael J Fox Foundation is aiming to test wearable sensors in smart watches made by Intel's Basis division, to monitor the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's is a neurodegenerative brain disease that is diagnosed in around 60,000 Americans per year.

Actor Michael J Fox created this New York-based foundation in 2000 after being diagnosed with the degenerative neurological disorder. The foundation is dedicated to find cure for Parkinson's disease through an aggressively funded research agenda.

The foundation has begun to equip patients with Intel Basis smart watches to track patients' health and medication response on accurate ongoing basis.

The Basis smart watch weighing 1.55 ounces, costs around $149. It will be used to track heart rate and its movement. It has a four-day battery life and syncs wirelessly with laptops and with Apple iOS and Google Android mobile devices. It will generate data by talking around 300 recording per second per patient.

Fox told USA Today, "The answers are within us. We just need to find a way to let people into our brains both literally and figuratively, to help us figure this out".

Parkinson's researchers are looking forward to how these wearable devices will analyze and provide the useful data as the disease in itself is very complex.

Google has also announced to create a small contact lens with pharmaceutical firm Novartis. It will track diabetes patients' blood sugar from their tear fluid.

Intel and the Michael J. Fox Foundation have insisted that they will share their data with the wider Parkinson's community.

Intel's firm's former chief executive Andy Grove now serves as a senior advisor to the foundation. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's himself. This is the sole reason for Intel to linkup with the foundation's move. Intel's open source based analytics platform will be vital in processing the information and deriving useful conclusions.
