Alphabet plans to test wireless charging on its self-driving cars

According to recent documents filed by Google's parent company, Alphabet, with the US Federal Communications Commission
(FCC), the company evidently plans to test wireless charging on its self-driving cars.

Google is currently running on-road tests of its self-driving cars in three US cities -- Mountain View, California, where the company is headquartered; Austin, Texas; and, most recently, Kirkland, Washington.

With the list of Google's test locations for self-driving cars expected to grow in the near future, it is apparent that the company is aware of the fact that one of the biggest bottlenecks for extended testing is 'battery capacity.'

The FCC filing by Alphabet hints at the company's evident plans to overcome the 'battery capacity' hurdle faced by self-driving cars by including wireless charging capability for the vehicles.

In an indication of Google's efforts in that direction, the documents filed with the FCC have revealed that the company has seemingly laid the groundwork for bringing wireless charging capability to its self-driving cars, by working out partnerships with Hevo Power and Momentum Dynamics. The two companies have received the go-ahead from Google for the installation of experimental chargers at Mountain View.
