Physicists have recently detected a new particle using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) situated at the CERN facility in Switzerland. Scientists are claiming that this particle might be capable of bring about a revolution in the field of physics. The new particle is likely to serve as a sign for the emergence of a new age of physics.
If the findings claimed by the physicists are established, it is likely to uncover a major error in the Standard Model of Physics. Subatomic physics is primarily based on a set of theories of the standard model.
The findings cannot be given the name of discovery as of now. However, the findings do uncover some facts about physics that were earlier unknown. The structure of matter is described in the Standard Model of Physics. Particularly, particles operate in varied roles in this model. Till now the findings are matching the forecasts of the Standard Model. “However, we know that the Standard Model cannot explain all the features of the universe”, said Mariusz Witek of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN).
A confusing difference was found by the researchers in 2011, with a beauty meson that comprised of a light quark and a heavy beauty antiquark. The decay of a B meson was also found to be inconsistent by the researchers, since the decay contained two muons along with other products.
According to Marcin Chrzaszcz from IFJ PAN, during the search for new phenomena or new particles, the assumption that is undertaken is that if the effect difference is over three standard deviations – 3 sigma – then it is an indication. However, for discovery the rate of accuracy has to be 5 sigma. Currently, the accuracy in the case of our analysis for the number of decays has reached a deviation level of 3.7 sigma.
