China planning to double doctor numbers to improve healthcare

The authorities in China are aiming to double the number of general doctors by the year 2020 and alto take steps to reduce its public sector and improve technology in order to address concerns and improve its healthcare system.

Experts say that China's healthcare system is affected by queues and poor rural services and it needs improvement. The country's fast growing healthcare market is attracting global drug makers, medical device firms and hospital operators aiming to be a part of the healthcare industry that will reach US$1 trillion by the year 2020, according to a research by McKinsey & Co.

China's State Council said in a five-year roadmap announced on Monday that, "Healthcare resources overall are insufficient, quality is too low, our structures are badly organised and service systems fragmented. Parts of the public hospital system have also become bloated."

The authorities said that there will be 2 general observe doctors for each thousand people by the year 2020, which is double the number of doctors than 2013. They are also planning to increase the number of nursing employees and support personnel. The lack of doctors mainly due to low salaries has affected the healthcare system in the country for a long time.
