Google plans to bring its driverless cars to the streets by 2017

Google apparently has plans underway to bring its driverless cars to the streets in 2017. The driverless cars to be produced by the company will not need the drivers to steer them, nor will these cars have accelerator or brake pedals.

However, in its ongoing testing phase of driverless cars in California, Google plans to temporarily equip the cars with a steering wheel and control pedals. This move stems for the fact that Google has to comply with the new rules which have been laid out recently by the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV).

According to the new DMV rules, driverless cars should be fitted with the requisite mechanism to enable a driver to monitor the cars effectively when they are on the road, and take physical control of the cars immediately whenever something goes wrong during the automatic driving mode.

In other words, the DMV rules imply that if driverless cars are to become a part of normal, day-to-day traffic, the drivers must be able to control the cars in case their self-driving function fails to work because of any mechanical problem.

Despite the fact that Google's driverless cars operate by way of Google maps navigation and can operate themselves if Google Maps are working properly, the company will equip its test cars with control pedals and steering wheel temporarily, in compliance with the new DMV rules.
