Apple Fined by Taiwan FTC for Price Restriction

Apple has to bear a fine of $666,700 for restricting the prices for their smartphone iPhone, to be sold in Taiwan by local telecom carriers. This fine has been charged by the Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) as the Apple is pressing carriers to seek its permission before setting the iPhone prices in the country.

The price control after selling distribution rights by the company is against the Taiwan's free-trade laws, which forced the FTC to take action against the company.

Apple Asia, the unit of the Cupertino-based company, also told the carriers to change service contract prices along with the subsidy prices. This report has been declared by the FTC on Wednesday, causing it to put fine of T$20 million on the company.

The names of the three carriers have been reported as Chunghwa Telecom Co Ltd, Taiwan Mobile Co Ltd and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co Ltd. Sun Lih-chyun, FTC spokesman, said that all the three tiers have the reseller rights to set their own prices according to the contract signed by them with the company.

It has been recently announced by the company that it has signed a new deal with the China Mobile Ltd. The company has signed this deal in order to sell its iPhones, increasing its points-of-sale in world’s largest Smartphone market.
