Ants’ Foraging Ability Better than Search Algorithms used by Google Maps

A study has revealed that ants are able to process information similar to Google search engine. Researchers found that ants use a highly systematic process to find food and bring it home. The systems used by the ants were found to be more effective than search algorithms used by Google Maps.

As some point ants appear to move in near-random patterns, but there arrives another point when they start moving in order and communicate with each other to result into better synergy.

German researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research looked into foraging behavior of ants. They tried to figure out patterns behind these actions of ants by feeding the information they collected about the ants to powerful computers.

Researchers from the Beijing University of Posts and Communications reached at the conclusion that ants dive themselves in two groups of scouts and gatherers while searching for sustenance. The scout group finds food sources and lays out a trail of pheromones to provide explicit directions to gathers towards the cache. This collective effort of ants helps them to save both time and energy.

Ants gain enough knowledge about the immediate territory surrounding their nest after they grow older. They learn to pass that information of the colony over a period of time and their collective search is managed more efficiently than what today's best human designers can achieve in online search algorithms.

"That transition between chaos and order is an important mechanism and I'd go as far as to say that the learning strategy involved in that is more accurate and complex than a Google search", said Jurgen Kurths of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

Kurths added that an effective foraging of ants heavily depends on their nest as well as their physical abilities and knowledge that come to them with time.
