Randfontein is the ‘fastest broadband speed’ area in South Africa

Ookla's Net Index results, reported in Beeld newspaper, have revealed that among all the broadband areas in South Africa, Randfontein is the fastest broadband area; followed by Bryanston, Midrand and Randburg.

According to the results, based on Ookla's 451,472 tests of 1.7-million broadband users' speed 5.05-million times between February 6 and last Thursday, the download speeds recorded in the Randfontein area was
11.3 megabits per second (Mbps).

With the mentioned download speed, the broadband speed in the Randfontein area is faster than the national broadband average of 3.82 Mbps. Other than Randfontein, eight areas in South Africa have broadband speed faster than the country-wide average.

Only two of these `faster than the national broadband average' areas - Secunda in Mpumalanga, with average broadband speed of 5.72 Mbps; and Worcester in the Western Cape, with 3.84 Mbps speeds - fall outside Gauteng.

However, despite the fact that Randfontein is the `fastest broadband' area in South Africa, the broadband speed in the area is still lower than 115 countries of the world. The broadband speed in Vilnius in Lithuania is
49 Mbps; while that in Hong Kong is 45.43 Mbps.
