Study shows angry men can be more influential than angry women

A new study has found that the men use anger to influence others on the other hand; women tend to lose influence if they use anger to make a point.

The researchers studied men use anger to influence others and concluded that men are more influential when angry. The study found that women do not usually have the same opportunity to influence when they express anger.

The study included a total of 210 jury eligible undergraduates who saw a 17-minute presentation that was linked to a real care in which a man was tried for murdering his wife. The participants were asked to read summaries of the opening and closing statements as well as eyewitness testimonies. They were also asked to look at photographs of the crime scene and the alleged murder weapon.

All of the participants were presented with the same data, however, the points were made with anger to some, while others were shown with fear and the rest were conveyed in an emotionally neutral tone.

Jessica Salerno of the Arizona State University, who is the co-author of the study, said that the participants' confidence fell after male holdouts expressed anger while participants became more confident in their original verdicts after female holdouts expressed anger even as they were expressing the same opinion and emotion as males.

Salerno said, "Our results have implications for any woman who is trying to exert influence on a decision in their workplace and everyday lives, including governing bodies, task forces and committees. We found that when men expressed their opinion with anger, participants rated them as more credible. But when women expressed identical arguments and anger, they were perceived as more emotional."

The findings were detailed in the journal Law and Human Behavior.
