In an announcement made on Friday, Internet search firm Yahoo said that it is shuttering Yahoo Directory --- a hand-picked, curated list of everything on the Internet. The move, according to the company, is rooted in Yahoo's efforts to focus on other areas.
The Directory - which indexed websites that helped users explore the Internet - was created by Yahoo's co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo back in 1994, even before the formation of Yahoo. It was initially called 'Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web;' and it featured a large clickable and scrollable database of popular sites.
As per the announcement made by Yahoo about the Yahoo Directory shutdown decision, the Directory - which lists popular sites by category, and was once the cornerstone of the company - will officially close on December 31,
2014.
In reference to the imminent closure of the Yahoo Directory at the end of this year, Yahoo said that advertisers will be upgraded to a new service. The details about how to get upgraded to a new service will be communicated to the advertisers directly by Yahoo.
About the shutdown of Yahoo Directory, the company said in a recent blog post: "While we are still committed to connecting users with the information they're passionate about, our business has evolved and at the end of 2014 (December 31), we will retire the Yahoo Directory."
