In a blog post published on Wednesday, Twitter-owned Vine entertainment platform announced the launch of a simple new button - called 'Watch' - to give users a new way to consume content on the Vine app.
The newly-introduced 'Watch' button - which is positioned next to the 'Follow' option - will give Vine users the ability to watch a particular channel or account without the need to scroll. A press of the 'Watch' button on a specific channel or account prompts a continuous, back-to-back play of videos in that feed.
The users of the Vine app can press the 'Watch' button any time they want to binge-watch a Vine user channel such as a TV show. When the users press the 'Watch' button, the newest Vine in the profile starts playing, followed immediately by the next Vine, and so on. If users want to see a particular video loop a few times before the next one is played, they can hold down on that video.
However, since the new 'Watch' option will not appear as part of Vine embeds, it will not be possible for users to start binge-watching Vines in Twitter or on somebody's website.
The introduction of the new 'Watch' button can potentially have an enormous impact in the consumption as well as creation of 6-second Vine videos. It will encourage a lot more narrative storytelling in Vine; thanks to the opportunity it gives to the creators to have their Vine channel watched by others as a series of videos.
