Music streaming service Spotify has efforts underway to migrate most of its home-built technology stack to the Google Cloud Platform over the next few months. As a result of the move, Google’s cloud infrastructure will soon deliver music to Spotify's more than 20 million subscribers across world.
The process of migration of Spotify’s technology stack to Google's infrastructure has already begun. However, the completion of the process will apparently take several months, given the massive size of the Spotify backend.
Moreover, the process will involve two separate projects -- one involving the migration of Spotify’s huge data stacks to the Google Cloud Platform; and the other involving the migration of Spotify services to Google cloud.
Spotify’s decision to migrate its home-built technology infrastructure to the Google Cloud Computing Platform marks a major win for Google. Till now, Spotify has maintained its own data servers, and has ensured quick streaming of music to its customers by leasing space close to them.
In reference to Spotify’s move to transition its technology stack to Google’s cloud infrastructure, Guillaume Leygues -- lead sales engineer at Google's Cloud Platform group -- said in a blog post that Spotify is using Google's cloud Compute Engine and Storage services to migrate its products from a horde of microservices powered by on-premise data centers to Google's Google Cloud Computing Platform.
