On Thursday, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued an application for a search warrant in the Southern District of California, requesting for the unlocking of an iPhone which is part of a California murder investigation.
The FBI's application for search warrant was first discovered by AppleInsider. Via the search warrant request, the agency seeks to break into an iPhone 5c handset owned by Taylor Langston, who - along with her boyfriend David Meza - is accused of the murder of 52-year-old Jake Clyde Merendino.
In its application for search warrant, the FBI has mentioned that it had earlier obtained search warrants for the purpose of extracting location data from Langston's iPhone. The agency also added that the mentioned data was obtained by using Israeli firm Cellebrite's technology.
About the Thursday application for another search warrant, the FBI said that the Cellebrite technology used for extracting location data from Langston's iPhone was not adequate enough for obtaining more information from the handset, as is required for the ongoing investigations into the murder case.
The FBI also said that it is seeking a new search warrant from the court for unlocking the iPhone connected to the California murder case because the time limitations of the initial search warrants have lapsed.
