Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt may sell 42% of his stake

In a Friday filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Internet search giant Google announced that its Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, will likely dispose off nearly 42 percent of his stake in the company, amounting to a total of 3.2 million Class A shares.

On the basis of the $785.37 closing price of Google's shares on Friday, the sale of Schmidt's stake of 3.2 million shares will be worth a staggering amount of $2.5 billion.

With reports having revealed that Schmidt has approximately 7.6 million Class A and Class B common stock shares, the SEC filing by Google said that the sale of Schmidt's stake will take place under a new stock trading plan designed for the diversification of Schmidt's investment portfolio. Moreover, in order to ensure that the move has a substantial effect on the market, the sale will be carried out all through the year.

Meanwhile, since it is still not sure whether Schmidt will actually sell his stake as mentioned in the SEC filing, Opus Research senior analyst Greg Sterling has expressed the opinion that the trading plan designed to enable Schmidt to diversity his investment portfolio could be seen as Schmidt beginning to "cash out a little."

In fact, projecting the seeming outcome of the move, Sterling said: "I wouldn't be surprised if he departs within 12 to 24 months."
