Western Digital unveils 400 GB-capacity microSD card

Western Digital’s newest SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card claims to be the world’s largest-capacity microSD card for use in mobile devices, especially smartphones. As the name suggests, the 400GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I microSD card is capable of cramming 400GB of storage into mobile devices.

It can store up to 40 hours of Full HD video as well as has the capacity to transfer data at a speed of up to 100MBps. At this speed users will be able to transfer 1,200 3.5MB images per minute over USB 3.0.

Jeff Janukowicz, vice president of research at IDC, said, “We anticipate that storage needs will only continue to grow as people continue to expect more sophisticated features on their devices and desire higher quality content.”

Western Digital explained that its memory technology, design and unique processes of production allowed for more bits per die, which eventually enabled it to push the microSD card’s capacity up again.

The new microSD card, which Western Digital is aiming at widely-popular Android tablet and smartphone users, comes with a price tag of $249.99.
