In an announcement made via a blog post on Thursday, social network Facebook has revealed that it is rolling out a new update to tweak its algorithm, so that more stories of interest can be shown to users. The algorithm change announced by Facebook will chiefly revolve around the time spent by users take on reading an article posted on the social network.
According to Facebook, the tweaked algorithm will ensure that users are shown more stories that they are likely to spend time reading.
As a result of the change in algorithm, Facebook will now predict the duration of time which users are likely to spend looking at an article in the Facebook mobile browser or an Instant Article, after they have clicked through an article from their News Feed.
In other words, the update underscoring Facebook's tweaked algorithm will rank stories by taking into account the likelihood of users clicking on them, and also spending time on reading those stories.
About the change coming to the users' News Feed owing to the tweaked algorithm, Facebook's Moshe Blank and Jie Xu said in the blog post: "With this change, we can better understand which articles might be interesting to you based on how long you and others read them, so you'll be more likely to see stories you're interested in reading."
