A Puzzling Giant Crater Discovered in far Northern Siberia

Recently, a 60-meter wide crater was discovered in far northern Siberia. Russian scientists are of the belief that the crater could be the result of 'build-up of excessive pressure' underground owing to increasing temperatures in the region.

On Wednesday, Andrei Plekhanov, a senior researcher at the Scientific Research Center of the Arctic, travelled the crater from the Bovanenkovo gas field in the far northern Yamal peninsula. After observing the crater, Plekhanov said 80% of the crater appeared to be made of ice.

He did not notice any signs of an explosion. Henceforth, eliminating the possibility that meteorite might have caused the crater in the region. At the edges, the crater is around 80m, but it continues to get deeper of unknown depth. The sides of the crater were showing signs of fresh earth, which led experts to indicate that the crater was created in the last few years only.

The crater was found by engineers on the Russia's Yamal peninsula. They were flying past in a helicopter when they saw the hole. Russian scientists said they are quite interested to know what led to the occurrence of the hole.

It is vital to know the same as the area is being used to extract natural gas. The hole has led to concerns that changes in the area can prove dangerous during drilling.

Experts believe that the hole could be the result of an explosion of gas that would have built naturally. The fresh earth surrounding the hole gave the impression that the material has burst out from below.
