In a move which will give mobile virtual reality (VR) a confidence boost, semiconductor firm ARM has recently announced its new processor and graphics designs at the 2016 Computex trade show.
The new processor and graphics designs announced by ARM underscore the company’s forthcoming Cortex-A73 CPU -- a high-performance CPU core -- and its new Mali-G71 GPU which has been designed to work with the A73 in 10nm mobile SoCs.
Both the new processors announced by ARM have been designed to power emerging applications like digital assistants, high-quality games, VR, and augmented reality (AR).
According to ARM, the new suite of mobile processors will have the capability to run higher resolution displays without leading to an instantaneous battery drain. The company also said that the new processors will likely start showing up on some mobile devices by the end of 2016; with volume production expected to commence in 2017.
In reference to ARM’s new processors, the company’s Vice President Pete Hutton said in a statement that “In 2017, we will see devices with the Cortex-A73 and Mali-G71 processors that stand out thanks to their impressive and sustained performance, and even more stunning visuals;” and added that the new technology “can make engaging with 4K video, virtual reality and augmented reality an everyday experience on a mobile device.”
