Tech giant Google has joined forces with automakers Ford and Volvo, as well as ride-sharing service Uber and Lyft, to form a new coalition which will seek faster action from lawmakers and regulators in bringing self-driving vehicles to the market.
The coalition formed by the five companies -- Google, Ford, Volvo, Uber, and Lyft -- is called ‘Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets.’ The counsel and spokesman for the coalition is David Strickland, the former administrator of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Announcing the coalition on Tuesday, the five companies said that the key objective behind the formation of the coalition is to impel the federal government to usurp a "patchwork" of state driving laws which could pose potential hindrances to the adoption of self-driving car technology.
According to a statement released by the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets, the main mission of the coalition would be to “work with lawmakers, regulators and the public to realize the safety and societal benefits of self-driving vehicles.”
The coalition also said that, for bringing the “vision of self-driving vehicles to America's roads and highways,” it will work with civic organizations, municipalities and businesses.
