A proposal has been put forth by a team of Google employees to the Unicode Consortium this week, suggesting the creation of "a new set of emoji that represents a wide range of professions for women and men." Unicode Consortium is a non-profit group which approves new emojis.
Proposing the expansion of the current emoji list -- which includes more than 1,000 standardized emojis used worldwide -- with the addition of 13 new emojis to women and men in professional roles, the team of Google employees said that the key objective behind the introduction of the proposed emojis is to highlight the "diversity of women's careers" as well as to "empower girls everywhere."
The 13 new emojis proposed by the Google team -- which includes The Unicode Consortium co-founder and president Mark Davis -- include a female scientist, software engineer, businessperson and mechanic, among others.
The 13 professions which the Google team wants the emojis to represent were finalized by the team after examining a number of sources, including Bureau of Labor Statistics data and reports related to women-dominated professions.
Drawing attention to the fact that there presently are no emojis to depict a female CEO or factory worker, the Google team said in its proposal that it is high time that emojis "reflect the reality" that a significant role is played by women in all walks of life and in all professions.
