WHO to Examine Most Promising Treatments against Ebola Virus

Ebola outbreak is spreading faster than the control strategies adopted by the affected countries, said WHO Chief Margaret Chan. In Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, 3,500 confirmed or probable cases have been reported.

The WHO said that over 1,900 people have died in West Africa's Ebola outbreak. On Thursday, the WHO will be carrying out a meeting in which it will examine most promising treatments against Ebola virus. Measures should be also assessed as how to increase the testing and production process.

Disease control experts, researchers and officials from affected countries will be attending the meeting in Geneva.

The WHO has made it clear that at least $600m will be required to fight the virus. It has warned that more than 20,000 people can be infected before the outbreak is put under control. Ms. Chan stated that the outbreak is the biggest and harshest they have ever seen.

"No-one, even outbreak responders with experience dating back to 1976, to 1995, people that were directly involved with those outbreaks, none of them have ever seen anything like it", affirmed Ms. Chan.

In three weeks leading to 3rd September, over 40% of deaths have taken place indicating that efforts are not able to match up the pace of the epidemic. The WHO said that the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Port Harcourt can become severe and more people can be diagnosed with it.

On Tuesday, medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) stated that a global military needs to intervene to combat the outbreak. The charity thinks that the global effort is effective enough and that is the reason that the virus could not come under control.

Military and civilian teams capable of handling the situation should be deployed at the affected areas. More number of isolation wards should be set up and trained healthcare should be given the task to handle situation in the regions that are most affected by the virus.
