Engadget: Google is working on high-end headset that mixes AR and VR

According to an Engadget report, tech giant Google is working on a high-end standalone headset which will apparently amalgamate the features of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

The Engadget report about Google’s ongoing efforts to build an AR/VR headset comes close on the heels of a Recode report that the company has abandoned its plans to develop an original headset which would have competed with gaming-centric VR headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. However, in reporting that Google had scrapped its plans to build the original headset, the Recode report had also said that the company had other hardware projects in development.

About Google’s evident efforts in building an AR/VR headset, the Engadget report -- based on the information shared by unidentified sources -- has revealed that the dedicated headset will not need the use of a smartphone or computer to work.

Moreover, the headset would come with a screen, and its feature may lean more on AR than on VR.

Though it is not yet clear as to how Google’s reportedly-in-development AR/VR headset would look like, it is being speculated that the headset will probably be closer to the Microsoft HoloLens headset rather than the Oculus Rift.
