18 military bases at risk from rising tides, new report predicts

In the last 10 years solely, thermometers have calculated some of the hottest average temperatures in documented history. With the increase in mercury, climate change is quickly turning into a sad reality for many.

In the United States solely, 13.1 million people living in low-lying regions may be forced to move because of rising tides, as per sea level projections.

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted that by the end of the century, sea levels will go up between one and three feet, making a swing of tangible affects on industry and suburban life.

A latest report released on Wednesday by the Union of Concerned Scientists has brought in another group, the military, predicting that minimal 18 military bases are facing risk from rising tides.

In a telephonic interview with The Christian Science Monitor, Sean Hecht, the co-executive director of the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA School of Law, said, “Reports like this are very helpful. We don’t have the resources to understand each and every natural process, so reports like this help alert us to changes that greatly impact key infrastructure”.

Erika Spanger-Siegfried, main author of the report, said that the report is only a snapshot of expensive coastal flooding at some coastal bases.

Ms. Spanger-Siegfried told the Monitor that they are hopeful that the military is going to consider the report, and use its findings to conduct closer base-level studies at all endangered coastal bases, a few of which weren’t even in the study.

Spanger-Seigfried said that the military knows the best it could do to build resilience. Presently, the US House of Representatives has halted a climate adaptation plan funding, effecting military holdings, though the Senate hasn’t.
