Google’s updates Android Phone app to add spam detection feature

Tech giant Google has rolled out an update to its Phone app for Android, to add spam protection against unwanted calls. Initially, the availability of the spam detection feature will be limited to those Phone app users who own Nexus or Android One devices.

As a result of the rollout of the updated version of the Phone app which will now have the capability to identify span callers, the users of the app will be alerted if an incoming call is from a possible "suspected" spam caller.

The alert to spam calls -- mostly an unwarranted sales or marketing call -- gives users the ability to take the requisite action to counter such calls.

According to the details shared by Google, the new spam detection feature on the Phone app will enable users to block as well as report spam numbers. The disclosure implies that user data will be used by Google for recognizing the sources of annoying calls.

For blocking and reporting spam calls, users of the updated Phone app have to turn on Caller ID & spam protection. The 'Block / report' spam option will show up from within the Recent calls log to allow users to tap on a call they would like to report.
