Google adds elevation data to bike routes in Maps service

In a move which will be especially useful for cyclists biking in unfamiliar areas, Google made the quiet addition of elevation data to bike routes in its online Google Maps service on Friday.

The addition of elevation information for cyclists is a new feature launched by Google for its Maps service. The feature apparently works for a large part of the US and Canada, for any distance.

About the new addition to Maps, Google said that the Maps service already factored in elevation when determining routes for cyclists; but, till now, cyclists could not easily see the elevation data.

A graphical representation of the elevation of a route is now displayed by the Maps service when users type in an origin and destination for biking. A dragging of the cursor along the selected route prompts the graphic to show the elevation changes at any given point; with the total elevation change also displayed for the benefit of the cyclists.

Currently, Google is displaying the elevation data only on the desktop version of its Maps service. However, the feature will likely be added to the mobile Maps apps in the near future.
