Global Forest Watch, online forest monitoring system, which is one-of-its-kind, has been launched. Google, the World Resources Institute and many other groups are involved in the launch.
The system will perform functions like tracking logging, wildfires and other changes. Generally, people check the reports having data online. But these reports are old and are often confusing and hard to comprehend.
But such issues have been sorted out in the new system. It will present huge amount of data of forests and will present in a very easy and comprehensive manner. To do the same, the Global Forest Watch will take the help of Google Earth, Google Maps and local, regional and space satellite data that will be retrieved from NASA and other agencies.
"Anyone can see what's happening to forests, no matter where they live across the world, and get involved in areas to protect those forests", affirmed Nigel Sizer, Director of the World Resource Institute's Global Forest Initiative.
Sizer, who led the development of the site, said the site also allows users to upload their own observations. When their observations will be combined with the data, then it is going to come up with a mind-boggling amount of data with regard to deforestation and forest growth.
The information from the site can be used for varied purposes. Corporations can use the same to prevent the usage of such products that can cause deforestation. Governments can use the data to know where they need to focus. Teachers and local citizens can turn to site to look after the nearby woods. Incidents like wildfires are updated daily and deforestation information will be updated every 16 days.
