The Federal Aviation Administration has given environmental clearance to SpaceX to build a launch pad near Boca Chica Beach in South Texas. On Thursday, the FAA unveiled the final draft of project's environmental impact statement.
Though the FAA has given environmental clearance to SpaceX, it has also raised multiple environmental concerns that SpaceX need to resolve before it proceeds. Texas is one of the four sites under consideration for commercial rocket launch and other locations are in Florida, Georgia and Puerto Rico.
Texas officials have been making efforts to bring SpaceX in the state as it will create new jobs and would also attract tourism. Officials have been offering deals to sway SpaceX to build a launch pad at Boca Chica Beach. They have reportedly offered the company $15 million in incentives.
In April, SpaceX founder Elon Musk had hinted that his company would start building rockets at Boca Chica Beach if the project gets approval with regard to environmental assessments headed by the FAA. Cameron County Judge Carlos H. Cascos said Musk's statement gave a clear indication that the company is serious about making a rocket launch pad in Cameron County.
"There are the obstacles that we had and everyone came together and worked together at the state level, the governor's office and the local level. Good things happen when people work together", said Cascos.
As per the Federal Register, SpaceX proposes to build a vertical launch area and control center to have 12 commercial launches per year. The rockets will include the Falcon 9.
According to the FAA report, the proposed launch site meets all the current environmental policies and will also not affect water or air quality in the area.
