Online retail giant Amazon started selling its new streaming media set-top box - called the Amazon Fire TV - last week; and the device went out of stock quickly. The customers' overwhelming response to Fire TV continues the tradition of the Kindle and Kindle Fire devices as well as most of the other Amazon-branded hardware products of the past.
The Amazon Fire TV set-top box is being sold at the Amazon. com website. The device is also available at retail from Best Buy and Staples.
With the Fire TV having found itself quickly out of stock within days of its last-week launch at a New York media event, the Fire TV page, as of Sunday night, listed the device's in-stock date as April 21, for an eight-day backlog for online orders.
The $99-priced, 4.5-inch square Amazon Fire TV set-top box - which chiefly challenges Roku and Apple TV - offers most of the leading streaming services, except HBO Go. The device also offers gaming functionality beyond those of most of its rival products. Equipped with a quad-core processor similar to the processors used in latest handsets, the Fire TV also offers 8 gigabytes of storage.
Noting that Amazon is "thrilled with the customer response to Fire TV so far," a company spokeswoman said in a statement: "We're building more as quickly as we can and we're expecting more inventory next week."
