Google Doodle Celebrates Rachel Louise Carson’s 107th Birthday

Google is celebrating 107th birthday of American marine biologist Rachel Louise Carson with a doodle posted on its main page. Rachel Louise Carson's book Silent Spring played a pivotal role in banning Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and other pesticides. Also, the book initiated an environmental movement.

Born in Pennsylvania, United States, on May 27, 1907, Rachel Louise Carson dedicated her life to marine science. A US National Book Award was given to her for one of her bestsellers, The Sea Around US' in 1951. Also, she was appreciated for many other books including The Edge of the Sea, Under the Sea Wind.

Carson spent her life studying marine biology, ecology, pesticides and nature writing. She brought global attention to what all problems the conservation of the environment suffered.

Carson studied at the Chatham University and the John Hopkins University. She worked closely on a research project about the harmful effects of pesticides on marine life based on examination of the synthetic pesticides developed during the Second World War.

Carson could be seen standing in the doodle. In the doodle, she is holding a notebook amidst a vast expanse of marine and plant life and birds. Also, she has a backpack and a pair of binoculars.

Carson suffered from breast cancer and the treatment caused her a respiratory infection. She died after suffering a fatal heart attack on April 14, 1964.

President Jimmy Carter awarded Rachel Louise Carson with the Presidential Medal of freedom posthumously.

"Great poets from Homer down to Masefield have tried to evoke the deep mystery and endless fascination of the ocean. But the slender, gentle Miss Carson seems to have the best of it. Once or twice in a generation does the world get a physical scientist with literary genius", quote from the New York Times describes. Her studies to ban pesticides made her an enemy of chemical industry.
