Lake Natron Becomes Cemetery for many Small Species

According to a report, the chosen mating ground of the endangered flamingo is the Rift Valley's Lake Natron.

Lake Norton serves as heaven for the long legged waterfowl, as they flourish in these waters. But the same lake becomes hell for the other living creatures because of its steeply alkaline waters.

These alkaline waters which are paradise for the waterfowl become the graveyard for many small birds.

For a haunting new series of photographs, a Wildlife photographer, whose name is Nick Brandt, has used the corpses of the Tanzanian lake shores as posed models.

Natron is usually blood-red from bacteria and the only living thing that can survive in it is the deadly alkalinity. Its temperature usually tosses up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The lake is also reputed for washing up the bodies of small animals on its shores. Each body can be seen wrapped in a delicate crusty shroud.

Brandt created a whole series of photographs to document the eerie phenomenon with the images of startlingly well-preserved bodies of bats, flamingos, eagles and swallows.

Brandt said, "I unexpectedly found the creatures - all manner of birds and bats - washed up along the shoreline of Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania".

Brandt's photographs will be published in a photo anthology by Abrams Books and are displayed at the Hasted Kraeutler Gallery in New York City.
