U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Defends Plan to Drop Gray Wolf Protection

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service had put forward its proposals to drop federal protection for gray wolves across most of the Lower 48 states. The director of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service is strongly defending its proposals ahead of a series of public hearings on the plan.

The agency raised concerns in June to remove the name of the wolf from the endangered list everywhere except in parts of Arizona and New Mexico. These areas are places where the Mexican wolf population facing threats. He said that there is no danger for the species any longer.

However, some environmentalists and scientists are saying that it will be too early to drop federal protections.

A press release from the Center for Biological Diversity has highlighted the case against the government’s numbers of wolves and methods very well.

The director of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service said, “The acceptable number for the Montana wolf population closer to the required 130 wolves and 15 breeding pairs set forth by the federal government”.

He said that 18,889 licenses were issued to hunt in the 2012 season when the minimum count was 653 wolves. As per estimates, around 70% of 226 wolves were killed by hunters last year.
