Internet search giant Google has revealed in a Monday announcement that it has decided to make an investment in Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Himax Technologies, the company which helped Google bring the head-mounted display in Google Glass to the market.
Despite the fact that there has been no official disclosure about the total investment Google is planning to make in Himax Technologies, the announcement made on Monday has revealed that Google will acquire 6.3 percent of the Taiwanese company's subsidiary, Himax Display. The transaction is likely to close this quarter.
Going by the information shared by Himax, Google reserves the right to continue buying up shares in Himax Display over the next one-year period. If Google does actually acquire more shares in the company, it can own a maximum of 14.8 percent of Himax Display.
The investment which Google is making in Himax Display - which manufacturers liquid crystal on silicon (`LCOS') chips and modules used in applications including head-mounted display - is an indication that the production of Glass is indeed on the increase.
According to the company's statement, the funds will be utilized for upgrading production, as well as expanding capacity, and making further improvements in the production capabilities at the Himax Display facilities.
