In a Monday statement, Amazon revealed that it has received the approval of The Netherlands banking regulator - De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) - for use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) by the financial organizations in the country. The AWS approval was discreetly issued by DNB on July 11.
The disclosure by Amazon implies that the company's AWS cloud services have received the DNB's clearance for comprehensive use across all spheres of Dutch financial operations, including websites, retail banking, mobile applications, and credit risk analysis solutions.
Moreover, going by Amazons disclosure, the DNB's approval for use of AWS in Dutch financial organizations also includes all levels of data storage and management on the AWS Cloud, as well as the use of technology that runs on top of AWS and is provided by third-party vendors.
With the AWS approval by DNB, banks in The Netherlands will join other financial organizations which already use Amazon's cloud services. These organizations, according to Amazon, include Bankinter in Spain; Unicedit in Italy; and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
About the use of AWS by Dutch financial organizations, DNB spokesman Remko Vellenga said that before the organizations start using AWS cloud computing, they have to inform DNB and provide the regulator with an opportunity to review a risk analysis.
Noting that DNB believes that using third-party cloud computing service is actually a kind of `outsourcing,' Vellenga said that users of such services are "held to the same legal requirements that apply to outsourcing."
