Female Genital Mutilation end needs more efforts

Female genital mutilation or FGM is a burning topic as several people and groups support ending this practice. In Egypt about 91 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 49 have undergone female genital mutilation.

The procedure has been experienced by over 125 million women and girls living in Africa and the Middle East and over the next 10 years 30 million girls are at risk.

Though, there has been a decline in FGM with growing awareness among people and countries that practice this convicting people for such practices, a lot needs to be done, according to United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF). The procedure is experienced more by women belonging to earlier generations as compared to women now.

Efua Dorkenoo, advocacy director for Equality Now and a recipient of the Order of the British Empire for her campaign to stop the practice stated that the procedure leads to various complications like infections, pain during intercourse, complications during delivery and even death while the procedure is performed by traditional practitioners who use rough instruments for doing this without anesthesia.

She said, "Girls develop cysts, keloids, and psychological complications, a risk that's quite neglected but is coming up quite a lot."
