Genesee Walk to End Alzheimer's: Many Marched to Show Support

A march on Saturday in Genesee Countyhas signaled that although there’s no treatmentto cure Alzheimer’s disease, people will still battle against it.People in record numbersgathered for the Genesee Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease is among those diseases that kill many in the US every year. The march was to raise awareness about the conditions and to show support for those who are battling against it.

Kathy Horgan fromBatavia said that she and her husband were also a part of the walk in 2015. During the march of this year, she was holding a purple pinwheelto show herself as a person who lost a loved one because of the condition. She was given thepurple pinwheel in May after the death of her husband, James Horgan Jr. According to Kathy, last year,James held the blue pinwheel flower to represent as one with the disease. He died four years after being diagnosed with it.

Apart from her children and grandchildren, there were many people who participated in the Saturday walk. Horgan said she urges more research in the arena and wants help for families that are getting through such tough times.

Alzheimer’s is not a new term for Dave Gonlag, whose great-grandmother and a sister had dementia, and his aunt passed this year. Gonlag is familiar with the conditions since he was a boy. He was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2014, as perGonlag.

“We’ll speak to anyone, support this however we can and use our resources to help.Everyone has been affected by it, but people just don’t talk about it”, said Gonlag, who participated in Saturday walk with his wife Donna.
