Larry Page reportedly wants Google Fiber operations to be scaled back substantially

The Information has revealed in a Thursday report that Google’s parent company Alphabet apparently has plans underway to substantially scale back the operations of the Google Fiber high-speed Internet and TV service, seemingly because of unsatisfactory performance.

According to the report, Alphabet CEO Larry Page wants the Google Fiber workforce to be reduced significantly. Page has reportedly asked Google Fiber chief Craig Barrett to downsize the Fiber team by 50 percent, to approximately 500 employees.

The Information report, based on the details shared by unidentified sources familiar with the matter, said that substantial scale back of Fiber operations being planned by Alphabet is seemingly rooted in the fact that the service has disappointingly failed to attract the number of subscribers which the company had expected it would, when it was first launched.

In other words, the actual sign-ups for the Google Fiber service appear to be much less than the company’s targeted goal of ‘five million subscribers in five years.’

Highlighting the fact that the trials of the Google Fiber broadband and TV service were commenced in the year 2011, The Information report said that only about 200,000 people have, thus far, signed up for the service, in more than five years after the beginning of the trials.
