Oracle suffers data breach within its retail unit

According to a Monday report published by independent cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs on his website Krebs on Security, cloud biggie Oracle was hit by a data breach within its retail unit.

The report, based on the information shared by unidentified sources aware of the matter, revealed that the breach affected hundreds of Oracle computers, as well as the company's online support portal which enables it to remotely address the issues raised by customers about its cash register-connected terminals.

Krebs said in the report that the malicious software which attackers had planted on Oracle's systems basically gave them the ability to steal the log-in credentials of the customers.

In an official confirmation of the data breach, Oracle has stated in an email sent to Fortune that it had discovered malicious software on systems which run the company's network of MICROS payment terminals.

In confirming the compromise of MICROS payment terminals by attackers, Oracle asked the users of the service to change their account passwords. In addition, Oracle also asserted that its other corporate networks, cloud services, and systems were not affected by the data breach.
