Tesla officially inaugurates its $5B Gigafactory in Nevada

Last week, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors held a grand inauguration of its massive $5-billion Gigafactory located in Nevada. At the Gigafactory, which was first proposed three years back, Tesla will produce lithium- ion batteries required for its electric cars.

The gigantic Gigafactory, which is still under construction, will be the biggest building in the world by footprint, if everything goes in accordance with Tesla's plans. The size of the building, aligned north to south, will be huge enough to cover 107 NFL football fields.

The mammoth building, when fully built, will have the capability to produce enough batteries to supply 150 gigawatt hours of batteries each year. In other words, the batteries churned out at the Gigafactory will be able to meet the requirements of nearly 1.5 million Tesla Model 3 vehicles.

With Tesla CEO Elon Musk describing the Gigafactory as "the most exciting factory in the world," Tesla considers the colossal facility to be much more than a battery factory because it is the most important part of Tesla's future and for the execution of Musk's highly ambitious mission to save the world from the impact of climate change.

Asserting that Tesla considers the Gigafactory to be "a product," Musk said: "The factory itself is the machine that builds the machine. It actually deserves more attention from creative problem solving engineers than the product that it makes."
