According to a VentureBeat report, Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa can now be told -- via the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, or Amazon Fire TV -- to order tens of millions of products on Amazon.
Prior to the new ‘product ordering’ capability which Amazon announced for Alexa on Friday, the virtual assistant was only able to reorder items which had been previously ordered by users or Amazon’s Choice products.
Revealing that the new ‘product ordering’ capability will enable Alexa owners to say “Alexa, order new Charmin toilet paper” or “Alexa, order me AAA batteries,” Amazon said that, for buying the items ordered by Alexa, customers simply have to say ‘Yes.’
In announcing Alexa’s new ‘product ordering’ capability, Amazon said that, as of now, only Amazon Prime customers can benefit from Alexa’s product ordering. The company also added that the virtual assistant cannot order items like apparel, watches, shoes, jewelry, Amazon Fresh, Prime Pantry, Prime Now, or Add-On items.
Towards that end, an Amazon representative told VentureBeat: “There are some limitations around things that require sizing like clothes and shoes. But it’s still day one and we’ll be adding more items all the time.”
