Google’s new ‘Rich Cards’ search format visually enhances mobile searches

In an apparent attempt to enhance the visual experience for Google search users carrying out searches on their mobile devices, Google has introduced a new 'Rich Cards' search format.

The Rich Cards search format was debuted by Google on May 17. From the visual perspective, the new format is an extension of the "card" visual language which is already being used by Google for some of its search results, such as with weather and some movie information.

As a result of the introduction of the new Rich Cards format, visual results will essentially be showcased by Google in a card-like format, like a carousel. With Rich Cards making search results stand out prominently from the remaining results, users will have the ability to scroll through the cards to conveniently see the most interesting and relevant results.

The Rich Cards unfold search results in a movable, scrollable carousel format horizontally; initially for only two categories of content --- Movies and Recipes. Moreover, as of now, Rich Cards search results show up only in English on the google. com website on mobile.

Describing Rich Cards as "a new Search result format building on the success of rich snippets," Google said: "Just like rich snippets, rich cards use schema. org structured markup to display content in an even more engaging and visual format, with a focus on providing a better mobile user experience."
