At the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, HTV Vive -- Taiwanese device maker HTC’s new wholly-owned subsidiary for its Vive virtual reality (VR) headset -- announced a $10 billion VR-centric initiative.
The new initiative announced by HTC Vive is called the VR Venture Capital Alliance (VRVCA). The initiative will be spearheaded by Alvin Wang Graylin, HTC’s China Regional President of VR.
For the VRVCA initiative, HTC Vive has partnered with 27 companies, including a number of VR-focused Venture Capital firms, as well as more staple firms like Sequoia Capital and Redpoint Ventures. The VRVCA partners will meet every two months in SF and Beijing.
The launch of the VRVCA initiative by HTC Vive underscores an evident effort by the company to ensure that the VR headset technologies it is developing have a broader ecosystem to fall into.
Though the chunk of the $10 billion amount which HTC Vive has earmarked for the VRVCA will be dropped into portfolio companies, the mentioned sum basically refers to the amount of “deployable capital” which will be at the disposal of the combined weight of the companies, and not necessarily the amount strictly dedicated to VR investments.
