In a recently-issued warning to civilian aviators, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has sounded the caution that global-positioning system (GPS) signals might be affected across much of the West for a few days in June, due to military testing of GPS interference.
According to the advisory issued by the FAA, GPS signals will remain “unreliable or unavailable” across a large area of west US on Thursday, June 9, and a few other days later this month.
Going by the information shared by the FAA, military testing of GPS interference commenced on Tuesday, June 7, centered at Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division based in China Lake, California.
The FAA has warned that the testing will likely hit flight controls for a particular kind of business jet across most of the western region, though experts opine that commercial airliners will probably remain unaffected by the testing.
Against the backdrop of the flight advisory issued by the FAA to civilian aviators, the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division said in a statement that the warning has been issued “in support of routine research, development, and test and evaluation efforts conducted at China Lake;” and added: "We regularly coordinate with the FAA through a standardized national process for these types of tests.”
