AT&T merges its wireless and business divisions into one unit headed by Ralph de la Vega

AT&T spokesman Brad Burns said in an emailed statement on Tuesday that the carrier is amalgamating its wireless and business divisions into one single unit, which will be called the AT&T Mobile and Business Solutions Group.

The merged unit will be headed by Ralph de la Vega, the former CEO of AT&T Mobility. The post vacated by Ralph de la Vega will be taken over by Glenn Lurie, the CEO of AT&T Mobility's Emerging Enterprises and Partnerships business.

AT&T's move to merge its wireless and business divisions, and shift around CEOs, comes in light of the retirement of Andrew Geisse - the carrier's now former CEO of AT&T Business Solutions - after a 35-year stint at the company.

The announcement about AT&T's newly-formed AT&T Mobile and Business Solutions Group comes at a time when cable companies are making apparent attempts to entice business customers away from traditional telecom carriers. As such, to ensure that AT&T becomes a more seamless competitor to cable companies, the carrier has been merging its wireline and wireless operations, including customer care and network operations.

With enterprise-related customers accounting for over 50 percent of AT&T's mobile revenues, Moffett Nathanson analyst Craig Moffett said about AT&T's latest moves: "They are simply making the case that the cornerstone of the enterprise sale is now wireless rather than wireline. It makes a ton of sense with the cable industry focusing more and more on the commercial segment."
