Scientists Discover New Species of Beetle in World's Deepest Cave

Scientists exploring the deepest cave of the world have discovered a new species of beetle. The discovery has made it very clear to scientists that it is an illusion to deny the existence of several species underground and there is a need to find them. The cave is situated in the Arabika massif in the Western Caucasus.

Named as Duvalius abyssimus, the discovery of the new beetle species was made in Krubera cave in Russia. Scientists were surprised to find the new beetle species 7,000 feet inside the cave.

There are two specimens as of now and one of them is a male and other is female, said Ortu'o, researcher of the University of Alcal in Spain. He said characteristics of the new species indicate that it is moderately adapted to life underground. And he supported this statement by revealing that the species have eyes unlike highly specialized cave species without eyes.

"The discovery of the new beetle provides important data on species that co-exist in these almost unknown ecosystems, even more so when they are found in a geographical area that is very difficult to access, such is the case with this cave", said Ortu'o.

It is still a mystery for researchers to explain the bizarre habit of the Krubera cave in the Western Caucasus. Cave beetles are known as the first living organisms that adapted to the conditions of hypogean or subterranean life.

A Portuguese scientist and a Spaniard have now discovered a new species of beetle in the deepest cave ever, which is a cave 2,140 meters deep.

The altitudes of the Arabika massif region in Abkhazia, where this cave is found, fluctuate between 1,900 and 2,500 meters. Moreover, the cave is composed of lower and upper Jurassic-Cretaceous limestone.
