First person carrying the deadly Ebola virus to be brought back to Europe for treatment is a Spanish priest. The death toll from this fatal disease is on the rise.
Miguel Pajares, a missionary who is 75 years old, was flown from Liberia to Madrid after he was put in quarantine on Saturday. He was treating patients who were infected with Ebola at a Catholic hospital.
Juliana Bohi, a Spanish nun, was also working with the priest has been brought to Madrid but she is not infected. Both worked for the San Juan de Dios hospital order, which is a Catholic humanitarian group that runs hospitals all over the world. Pajares and Bohi have both been kept in isolation at the Carlos III centre in Madrid.
A state of emergency has been declared in Liberia and Sierra Leone, two African nations, as many soldiers are setting roadblocks to prohibit residents to reach the cities.
The health service of Liberia is overwhelmed and there are reports that bodies are just being dumped in the streets by relatives, who are terrified of the deadly disease. They are doing so due to the fear of contracting the disease themselves if they take the bodies to morgues or hospitals.
A large number of hospitals and clinics have been shut down, said the assistant health minister Tolbert Nyenswah, as 67 health workers have contracted the Ebola virus.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) claims that ever since the outbreak has taken place in West Africa earlier this year, the deadly disease of Ebola has killed about 932 people and infected more than 1,700.
Director of Madrid's La Paz hospital, Rafael Perez-Santamarina said that the initial medical check-ups showed that Pajares was stable and Bohi was also in good condition.
He also confirmed that neither of them was bleeding, which is an advanced stage symptom of the disease.
