In a Tuesday announcement, the US wireless carrier AT&T said that its GigaPower fiber Internet service will be launched in Cupertino, California, in a few months.
According to the details shared by AT&T, the carrier has received the approval from Cupertino authorities to commence work on GigaPower fiber-optic-based home Internet service in the city. Cupertino is tech giant Apple's hometown; and is near Google's Mountain View headquarters.
Cupertino was one of the several Bay Area cities which were being considered by Dallas-based AT&T for its GigaPower fiber Internet service. It will be the first Californian city to receive AT&T's 1-gigabit-per-second offering. The carrier is also apparently planning to bring the service to a few other Silicon Valley areas.
AT&T said that the specific timeline for the availability of its GigaPower fiber Internet service in Cupertino, as well as the pricing of the service in the city, will be revealed in a later announcement.
About AT&T's GigaPower fiber Internet service coming to Cupertino, Eric Boyer - SVP of AT&T's U-verse Internet service - said in an e-mail: "AT&T's decision to launch and expand the GigaPower network goes well beyond our competitors' fiber plans. Wiring Cupertino is a no-brainer given our presence here and Silicon Valley being the hub for technology innovation."
AT&T spokesman Brad Burns said in an emailed statement on Tuesday that the carrier is amalgamating its wireless and business divisions into one single unit, which will be called the AT&T Mobile and Business Solutions Group.
