The closure of the Kenai River king salmon fishery has been declared by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game on Thursday.
Due to the closure, some commercial fisheries will be affected. This news is not good for the 'set-netters' also because they have to suffer a lot due to the decision of closure.
The agency announced that the river will be closed for the rest of the year. It is also a bad news for the people who are fond of sport-fishing.
According to the state Board of Fisheries management plan, the commercial fisheries on the beaches should also be closed.
The emergency orders of closing set gillnetting in the Kenai, Kasil of and East Foreland Sections of the Upper Sub district was announced by the Commercial Fisheries Division of Fish and Game.
According to Fish and Game's Division of Sport Fish data, about 2,400 fish have been killed and 534 were those which were kept by fishermen. The killing of total 1,833 fish was reported by commercial fisheries.
Due to closure of the sport fishery, a multimillion-dollar Kenai tourism industry will also be affected but it will not affect much because generally it closes in a week.
Daily estimation of king salmon passage was below hundreds of fish and the maximum passage was observed on Sunday, which was more than 100 fish. The calculation has fallen drastically.
Fish and game sport fish division management biologist Robert Begich said, "If 5,000 kings came into the river overnight, if a miracle happened, yeah we'd turn it back on, we just want to make the goal and it's just a day-to-day thing. Adding to it he said that it's going to take a lot to reopen".
