Against the possibility of an intense regulatory review of Sprint's proposed $32 billion acquisition of rival T-Mobile, Sprint owner SoftBank's founder and Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son is reportedly asking banks to commit funds for a longer-than-usual period of time.
According to Bloomberg News report, citing unidentified sources, lenders to Sprint are speculating that the company's T-Mobile takeover deal will apparently face a long approval process. As such, for financing the proposed acquisition, lenders are asking Sprint for a higher fee.
The Bloomberg sources have revealed on the condition of anonymity that Sprint is asking banks for funds to the tune of approximately $20 billion, while SoftBank is also seeking a similar amount. Other than acquiring T-Mobile with the funds, the financing extended by the banks to Sprint and SoftBank will also apparently go towards refinance of some of T-Mobile's borrowings, funding of T-Mobile's operations, and in an auction of wireless airwaves.
With Sprint having proposed to take over T-Mobile, which is majority owned by Deutsche Telecom, it is expected that Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice will probably take at least one year to review the deal.
As per the Bloomberg sources, the regulators plan to include a drop-dead date of 18 months after the announcement of the deal. After the drop-dead date, the deal can be terminated. However, the regulators may extend the deadline, if required.
