US Plans to Use Sound Blasting to Carry Out Research on Ocean Floor

With the help of sound blasting, the Federal Government is planning to carry out research on the ocean floor along most of the east coast.

This summer, the U.S. Geological Survey has planned to study underwater landslides so that they could know in advance where and when tsunamis may occur.

"New Jersey's marine life, fisheries and coastal economy can't get a break, which led a thus-far unsuccessful battle to block a sound blasting research plan off the coast of Long Beach Island", said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action.

The economic zone of the nations extends about 200 miles; it could be extended further but it depends on the results of the research.

The sediments that display past underwater landslides will be examined in this study and the areas of the U.S. and Caribbean coasts, which could be vulnerable to tsunamis, can also be found out from the data of the study.
Zipf said every 20 to 24 seconds, the researchers will blast the ocean floor with sound waves, and they will do this every year for minimum 17 days in survey.

According to environmentalists, the noise which will be generated from the blast can harm or also take life of the marine mammals, including whales, dolphins and turtles.

John Haines, coordinator of the Geological Survey's coastal and marine geology program, said that his group will take steps which will cause less harm to the marine mammals and they will also stop their work if they will see any animal nearby.

Haines said this year's planned research will be extended from the US-Canadian border to North Carolina and this plan still needs the permission by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
